A brief history of washi tape
Pure fun!
Washi tape is a decorative paper tape from Japan, usually sold in small rolls featuring colors, patterns, illustrations, or metallic details. Unlike ordinary sticky tape, it has a gentle adhesive, so it can often be lifted and repositioned. Its name comes from the Japanese words “wa,” meaning Japanese, and “shi,” meaning paper. The decorative tape itself is much newer.
In 2006, several women approached a Japanese manufacturer of industrial masking tape to share their creative uses for its products. Their enthusiasm inspired the company to develop colorful tapes for crafting. And now it’s a full-fledged art form!
The idea spread internationally, turning a practical industrial material into an accessible creative tool.
